A First Peter Mind and Spirit
By Leo Jaloszynski

“Take your Bible and take your newspaper and read both, interpret newspapers from your Bible.”

This is a quote from a Christian theologian written around the 1960s. I suggest that, as we stand as a nation in a “Come on, man” moment with Presidential candidate Biden (I write this on Veteran’s Day), this is how we need to process “this season” in this Republic called America.

You will be reading this commentary in the shadow of Christmas. An old bumper sticker encouraged us to keep “Christ” in our national holiday “season of shopping till we drop.” In the Bible is a letter called First Peter. The Holy Spirit then, and now, urged the readers of this letter to prepare our minds and spirits to live like aliens while on our temporary journey here on earth.

“Battle for the soul of our nation” was the 2020 democratic election team’s drumbeat theme. I believe they had the theme accurate, but the person occupying the “White House” cannot and will not ‘save’ the soul of our nation. What our nation needs to heal its soul is a Savior named Jesus. Candidate Biden in his “acceptance speech” used Bible quotes to motivate his hearers into believing that he can heal our nation. Really? On eagle wings, God alone can heal, but we must admit our sins before any healing from God can occur. Biden said, “we must marshal the forces of fairness and decency.” Really? For four years, there has been no evidence of decency or fairness offered by the “Washington swamp dwellers.” “End the era of demonization” urged candidate Biden. Really? “Refusal of Democrats and Republicans to cooperate is now a choice.” Really?

Yes, this is a time for “better angels” to prevail. Yes, angels of truth and not deception. Yes, God and history have called us to do spiritual work. But that is why Jesus, fully God and fully human, arrived on earth as an alien to begin a revolution over 2000 years ago. That revolution is still at work, changing hearts and minds and spirits. Patriots who love Jesus and love America must understand and claim, as their own, this alien mind and spirit gifted to us by Jesus in a manger long ago.

God began a spiritual work on American soil in 1776. British pilgrims displayed a God- produced change of heart, mind, and spirit. They no longer identified themselves as British citizens serving a human king, but as Americans. As Americans, we recognized, then and now, that our freedoms and rights come from God, not an earthly king or any Washington D. C. (elected and unelected) bureaucrat. God has raised up God-fearing leaders like George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Ronald Reagan, and yes, I believe, Donald Trump to remind us that “We the people” must first humbly bow our knees at the feet of Jesus if we expect our red, white, and blue flag to represent freedom for all American citizens.

General Washington had to deal with the treason displayed by Benedict Arnold and the planned mutiny of his army before America could peaceably begin growing into a great, blessed-by-God nation. Abraham Lincoln was raised up by God to heal our nation from the wounds of God’s judgment upon us for our national sin of slavery. Now we are facing God’s judgment for our national sin of rebellion against His laws. We must recognize our need to nationally submit to King Jesus to find true national healing.

Christians who claim that Jesus is their King must learn to live like an alien foreigner in what America has become. The loud voices of “cancel culture” yell at us to shut up and suck it up. Angry racist chants try to intimidate the efforts of Jesus-type love actions and use the violence of hate to “heal” their perceived patterns of harmful systemic race actions. As aliens, we must learn to live with our culture’s redefinition of words like “character”, “family”, “gender”, “honesty”, “baby”, “free speech”, etc. The mind and spirit of Jesus gives aliens the power to love our enemies and pray for them.

As aliens, a “First Peter mind and spirit” gives us the power to gladly sing, all year long and in every season, “Joy to the world, the Lord has come, let earth(and America) receive her King”.
