Truth Divides & Rational Lies

In 1776 a bold experiment began called America. With bullets and God-given courage, a group of patriots rallied around the battle cry, “Give me liberty or give me death”. In the late 1800s, America again used bullets to decide if “God’s truth was marching on” in a civil war over slavery. Now in the year 2020, America, on Nov.3rd will use ballots to decide whose “Truth” will continue to govern and secure our inalienable rights, given to us by our Creator. The Democrats say they will save the ‘Soul’ of America. The Republicans say it is God who will save the ‘Soul’ of America. Who will American voters believe and choose to submit to whose “Rule of Law and Order”?

In a courtroom of law, a witness is asked to put their hand on a Bible and swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help me God. You, who are reading this commentary, are the jury as I swear on my Bible, to tell the truth. A Roman official, long ago, asked Jesus, “What is truth?” Jesus said, “I am the Truth. You will know the Truth, and the Truth will set you free.” But who or what can anyone believe? So many voices and so many choices of truth. “ Caprock commentary says … Science says…the Pope says… parents say… Pastors say… the Bible says… satan says.

Our minds have a way of twisting truth even as we wrestle with our consciences. Listen to how false beliefs confuse our best reasoning: (1) It’s true if I believe it  (2) It’s true if we believe it  (3) It’s true if I want to believe it  (4) It’s true if it serves my vested interest to believe it. The words “rational lies” help define how we all convince ourselves to choose to behave in self-destructive ways. We know by our own experience how this happens, and we know from our study of history. Individuals and nations die when they buy too many rational lies.

America remains one of the few nations in the world that has the freedom to choose what kind of government will control or enforce one’s “truth”. Will we choose to live under a government of “laws” that maintain order and safety or a government that will use chaos to usher in its use of force and violence to dictate how we will live together. Many nations in the world no longer have the power to use bullets or ballots to decide what “government” will rule their everyday lives. Why are so many people still risking their lives trying to get into America, legally and illegally? In just a few short days, American citizens will begin casting ballots, freely, for local, state, and federal leaders that they believe will exercise “truth” to secure our inalienable rights endowed by our Creator.

Our American Constitution still says that “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness. To secure these rights, Governments are instituted among men, deriving their powers from the consent of the governed, that whenever any Form of government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government”, etc. These “truths” declared in 1776 remain “truths” today in the year 2020. We as “the governed” must decide, with God’s help, whose “truth” we believe will best secure our God-given rights.

Biden says he will save our nation’s ‘soul’. Really? Trump says it is not the government but “God” who will rescue us from the violence that tears apart our American cities. Will there be an “October surprise” that sways the vote of the “undecided”? As people, our minds are not easily drawn to the truth. Truth is understood with our minds and with our hearts. The power of words are both subjective and objective. Facts and Fiction are difficult to discern in the fog of self-interest and pride. I urge us all to pray that the “Truth”, Jesus, will in His mercy, keep us free as a nation with ballots not bullets.

I end with this true story. Our ‘inner-city church’ (the one we attend here in North Carolina) opened up its basketball court to the public. COVID has closed all other public courts. It was recently discovered that guns were being brought to the court “for cultural reasons”. One night, weekly, volunteers, serve food to 200 plus homeless people that come to the church for a free meal. I strongly urged our church leadership to remember that in a “Jesus culture” Jesus reminds us to be “Wise as serpents and innocent as doves”. We will be ruled by “street rules” or “Constitutional” rules. On Nov.3, 2020, America will be divided by the “truths” we believe and the rational lies we have bought.
